Flying to Dubai to Propose: A Planner’s Guide for Visitors
Published October 12, 2026

You can plan a Dubai proposal entirely from abroad. The couples who get it right lock the date and venue before they fly, propose on day two or three rather than the first or last day, sort the ring before they land, and hand permits, timing and crew to someone on the ground.
About three in four of the couples I plan for fly in, and India is our largest source market. I meet most of them for the first time on the night itself, usually from behind a dune or a pillar, while they walk towards a setup they’ve only seen on WhatsApp. So this guide isn’t general travel advice. It’s the process we run for visitors, and the mistakes I’ve watched people make.
How a fly-in proposal actually runs
| When | What happens | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| 4 to 6 weeks before you fly | You message me with dates, budget and a line about your partner. I send a shortlist that fits your hotel and trip length | You and me |
| 3 to 4 weeks before | Package confirmed. If you need a ring, the custom design starts now | You, me, DIAN Jewellers |
| 2 weeks before | Venue slot, crew, florals and any performers locked. Weather backup date agreed for balloons, yachts and drone shows | My team |
| Week of travel | Final timings, the cover story and exactly where you’ll stop walking | You and me |
| The day | Crew on site hours before you. Photographers in position before you arrive | My team |
| After | Photos, films and raw footage delivered |
What I need from you in the first message
Travel dates and your hotel. If you haven’t booked, tell me first. The right hotel can save you an hour of traffic on the night.
A budget range. Packages start from AED 5,499 and every price includes VAT and card fees, so the number doesn’t change when you pay from abroad.
What she’d hate. Crowds, heights, boats, being filmed. One line here rules out half the options and saves us both a week.
The ring situation. Bringing it or buying it here.
Family. Just the two of you, a video call home, or family hidden nearby.
Which day of the trip to choose
Not the day you land. Flights run late, bags go missing, and she wants a shower, not a candlelit walkway. Tiredness also shows in photos, and those photos stay with you.
Not the last day either. Balloons are grounded by fog, strong wind can move a yacht or a drone show, and every weather-sensitive plan we run has a backup date held. On your last day there’s nowhere to move it to. Plus she’ll be packing a suitcase at the exact moment you need her dressed up.
Day two or three. You’ve slept, you’ve found your feet, and there’s room to shift by a day. You also get the rest of the trip engaged.

Cover stories that work in Dubai
A dinner reservation with a dress code. Believable, and she arrives dressed for the photos.
A holiday photoshoot. The photographer is real, right up until you kneel. Sharp partners sometimes guess, so pair it with a second reason.
The 4:30 am balloon pickup. Nobody expects a proposal half asleep in a 4×4. The flight lasts about an hour over the desert conservation reserve, with a falcon show in the air and breakfast in the desert after. See our sky proposals.
Staying in. If she’s tired of plans, our SILK & SUITE setup turns your own hotel room into the proposal while you’re at dinner. Florals, a petal aisle, a heart frame and her song playing when the door opens.
Small things that matter more than they sound: tell her before you leave home to pack one really nice outfit, book her a manicure early in the trip, and ask everyone back home who knows to stay off her WhatsApp that evening. More than one proposal has been given away by a mother who couldn’t wait.
The ring: bring it or buy it here
Bringing it
Hand luggage only, never checked in, and never in a bag she might open. Carry the receipt or valuation certificate. The UAE asks travellers to declare jewellery and precious stones above a set value on arrival [VERIFY: AED 60,000], so check the current rule with UAE customs if your ring is worth more.
At the hotel, don’t use the room safe. Most couples share the code and she’ll open it for her passport. Keep the ring on you.
Buying it in Dubai
Our ring partner is DIAN Jewellers. They use GIA-certified diamonds, design in 3D, deliver in an LED-lit box, and match prices. A custom ring takes 2 to 3 weeks, so if you’re flying in for a week, start the design from home and it will be waiting when you land.
If you want something extra, ask me about the Gold Note: a 24k gold note engraved with your names and the date, made with DIAN. She gets the diamond from you and a keepsake of the day to go with it.
How the tourist VAT refund works
Jewellery in the UAE carries 5% VAT, included in the price. Visitors who aren’t UAE residents can reclaim most of it through the official Tourist Refund Scheme:
1. Buy from a participating retailer, spending at least AED 250 on one invoice.
2. Ask for a tax-free invoice and show your passport at checkout.
3. Validate the purchase at the airport refund kiosk before check-in, with the ring in your hand luggage.
4. Take the refund in cash or back to your card.
You get 85% of the VAT back, minus AED 4.80 per invoice, and the ring has to leave the UAE within 90 days.
| Ring price (VAT included) | VAT inside the price | Your refund |
|---|---|---|
| AED 10,000 | AED 476.19 | AED 399.96 |
| AED 30,000 | AED 1,428.57 | AED 1,209.49 |
| AED 60,000 | AED 2,857.14 | AED 2,423.77 |
Your home country may charge its own import duty when you land back, so check your allowance before buying.
Where to stay
From the Palm to Downtown is roughly half an hour. Most desert setups are 45 minutes to an hour from the city. Abu Dhabi is about an hour and a half from Dubai Marina.
If the proposal is at a resort, stay there. She gets ready upstairs, walks down, and the setup is waiting. No taxi, no traffic, no makeup redone in the back seat. Some resort packages don’t include the villa or room itself, so I’ll tell you what to book separately. If you’re splitting the trip, read my Abu Dhabi vs Dubai guide.
What visitors should know about the rules
Proposing is legal across the UAE. Hold hands, hug after the yes, and keep anything more for later. Alcohol is served in licensed venues like hotels and yachts. Same-sex proposals aren’t permitted in the UAE, and I’d rather say that plainly than have anyone find out after they’ve flown in. Full detail is in our legality guide.
A styled setup on a public beach or at a landmark needs permission, and without it the setup can be stopped before she arrives. If you want drone footage, read our drone rules first. Dubai’s position changed twice in 2026.
What you take home
Our standard packages include a private photographer and videographer, and you get 100 edited photos, 10 fully retouched images, a highlight film of up to two minutes, a vertical reel of up to one minute, and every raw file from the cinema cameras, GoPros and a 360 camera on a 3-metre pole. A fresh flower bouquet for her is included too.
Six mistakes I see visitors make
1. Booking the balloon for the last morning.
2. A styled setup at a public landmark with no permit.
3. The ring in the shared hotel safe.
4. Telling too many people back home.
5. No reason for her to dress up.
6. A venue two hours from the hotel on the day you land.
Start before you book flights
Send me your travel dates, the city you’re flying from and one line about your partner. I’ll come back with what I’d plan, which day I’d choose, and the full price in dirhams.
WhatsApp me. I answer these myself.
Frequently asked questions
Can tourists propose in Dubai?
Yes. Proposing is legal across the UAE for visitors and residents. Private venues are the simplest choice, and styled setups in public places need permission.
Which day of a Dubai trip should I propose?
Day two or three. Avoid the arrival day, and avoid the last day because weather-sensitive plans like balloons and yachts need room to move.
Can I get the VAT back on an engagement ring bought in Dubai?
Yes, if you’re not a UAE resident. Buy from a participating retailer, spend at least AED 250 on one invoice, ask for a tax-free invoice, and validate it at the airport before check-in.
How much VAT do I get back on a ring?
85% of the VAT paid, minus AED 4.80 per invoice. On a ring priced at AED 30,000 including VAT, that’s about AED 1,209.
How long does a custom engagement ring take in Dubai?
About 2 to 3 weeks with our partner DIAN Jewellers, so start the design before you fly.
Can I plan a Dubai proposal without visiting first?
Yes. Most of our fly-in proposals are planned entirely on WhatsApp, and the couple arrives with everything confirmed.
