I Have Guinness World Records Approval for the Largest Drone Proposal Ever Attempted. Here Is What It Costs, and Why It Still Has Not Happened

The number is AED 1,063,125 including VAT. That buys a 2,000 drone show over a Dubai beach, a full proposal production underneath it, and a Guinness World Records title that does not currently exist because nobody has ever claimed it.

I have the approval to attempt it. I do not have the event. The deposit did not arrive inside the permit window, and a 2,000 drone show is not something you can compress. That is the honest position, and I would rather write it down now than pretend the story ended well.

Here is the whole thing, including the parts that did not work.

Where it started

An enquiry came in on 24 July asking for drone proposal ideas. I sent references. The client’s line, more or less immediately, was that he needed to impress her and the money did not matter.

I have heard that before and it usually means the money matters at some point. In this case it did not, which is rarer than you would think, and it moved the conversation somewhere I had not taken a proposal before.

My first quote was 1,000 drones at AED 450,000 plus VAT. Then I sent him a reference image of what 1,000 drones actually produces.

He said it was not visible.

He was right. That is the part most people do not understand about drone shows.

Why 1,000 drones is not enough to make a face

A drone show is a low resolution screen made of light points hanging in the air. Each drone is one pixel. With 1,000 drones you can make a ring, a heart, text, an outline. Clean shapes with hard edges.

You cannot make a recognisable human face.

The client wanted her portrait in the sky, then his, then the two of them together the way they appear in his phone wallpaper. Portraits need enough pixels to carry the shading around eyes and mouth, and at 1,000 points you get something that reads as a face only if you already know it is meant to be one.

So I repriced at 2,000 drones. AED 765,000 plus VAT, permits included.

That single decision is what turned an expensive proposal into a world record attempt, though I did not know it yet.

The problem nobody expects: land

2,000 drones need roughly 2,000 square metres of clear ground to take off from and land on.

For context, a 500 drone show needs about 500 square metres. That fits on a lawn. I have run 500 drones in Dubai and it is straightforward. 2,000 square metres is a different category of request. You are asking a five star resort to give you a footprint the size of a small park, keep it empty, and issue an NOC for it.

I approached a Palm Jumeirah resort first. They came back wanting AED 120,000 as a minimum spend in exchange for the venue and the NOC. That is not an unreasonable number for what I was asking, but it pushed the total up before a single drone had been designed.

I went and looked at their available spaces myself. They were not right. I asked for the private beach instead. Management came back and said the beach had been allocated to something else and would not be available for events.

That was attempt one, dead.

The pivot to water

If I could not get 2,000 square metres of usable resort ground, the answer was to stop trying to put the audience and the launch pad in the same place.

Drones launch from one location. People watch from another. The only thing connecting them is a sightline.

So the second plan was a superyacht. Board at Dubai Marina, cruise out, hold position next to Ain Dubai, and fly the 2,000 drones off Skydive Dubai, which has the open ground and is already set up for aviation activity. The couple and their guests watch her portrait build itself in the sky from the deck of a yacht with nothing between them and it.

I priced that at AED 935,000 plus VAT. Three hour charter, floral and candle decor on board, catering for 25, the drone show with land, permission and NOC, two days of airspace booking for the operator’s technical flight and the show itself, a private violinist and a DJ on board, all permits, all graphics design, photography and videography.

The client liked it. And then, working through it, I found the cheaper and better version.

The third plan, which was the right one

A beach. Direct line of sight, no boarding logistics, no charter cost, and the launch and landing ground sits behind the guests instead of two kilometres away.

Beach version came in at AED 895,500 plus VAT, and because the yacht charter came out of the budget I put three musicians back in, violin, saxophone and cello, playing live during the arrival and through the show.

By late August, with the date moved to November, the final figure was AED 912,500 plus VAT. AED 958,125 all in.

Then the record.

Does the record even exist?

This is the part I want other planners to actually read, because I nearly assumed the answer.

I checked, properly, before I promised anything. There is no Guinness World Records category for the most drones used in a marriage proposal. The title does not exist. It has never been claimed by anyone.

What does exist around it:

The overall drone show record is enormous and completely out of reach. 22,580 drones flown simultaneously from a single computer by EHang Egret over Luogang Park in Hefei, China, on 3 February 2026. That broke a previous mark of 15,947 drones set in Liuyang in October 2025. Nobody is beating that with a proposal budget.

Guinness also maintains a whole family of narrower drone categories. Netflix took the largest aerial display of a fictional character with a 4,979 drone Vecna over Las Vegas. Closer to home, Ras Al Khaimah set the record for the largest aerial display of a phoenix formed by multirotor drones on New Year’s Eve, using 2,300 drones including 1,000 pyro drones. So the UAE already knows how to host and certify these.

And the largest publicised drone proposals I could find anywhere describe their fleets as “hundreds.” Vague, uncounted, uncertified. No adjudicator, no title.

Which means the space is open.

Filing a new category

Guinness lets you apply to create a record title that does not exist yet, provided it is measurable, verifiable and breakable. “Most multirotor drones used in a single marriage proposal” is all three. You can count drones, you can verify the count, and someone else can fly more next year.

For a commercial claim you go through their paid route and you hire their consultant, because the consultant is the difference between a title that gets approved and an application that gets rejected on a technicality after you have already flown the show. That cost sits around USD 15,000 before anything else, and you need an adjudicator or independent witnesses on the night.

I applied on 4 August. I met Guinness World Records on 6 August. We have their approval to attempt a new record.

I quoted the record component to the client at AED 100,000, which covers the application route, the consultancy, adjudication and the certification process.

Total: AED 1,063,125 including VAT.

The brutally honest part

I told the client this at the time and I will repeat it here. The record itself is a marketing asset, not a proposal product. Nobody should pay for 2,000 drones because they want a certificate. They should pay for 2,000 drones because they want her face in the sky at a resolution that actually looks like her.

The title is what happens on the way past.

Where it does have real value is afterwards. “The company that holds the world record for the largest drone proposal ever staged” is a line that carries a lot of weight in an industry where everyone else is describing their work as bespoke and unforgettable.

The permit calendar is what actually kills these

For a 2,000 drone show, my operator needs final confirmation, the landlord’s NOC for the beach, and the advance payment a minimum of 24 days before the flight date. Only once the NOC and the advance land does anything begin: permit applications, technical planning, creative production, operational arrangements.

Twenty four days is the safe minimum, and that assumes no complications. If the airspace requires additional security clearance from the Ministry of Defence, the clock gets longer.

On top of that I need 10 working days for the rest of the permits and 7 days to design the show graphics and get the client’s approvals on them, because 2,000 drones flying a custom portrait sequence is a design job, not a template.

Add it up. From confirmed payment to drones in the air, you are looking at five to six weeks minimum for a show at this scale. There is no version where you decide in a fortnight.

Why it has not happened

The date moved. Originally September, then the client’s own calendar shifted for reasons outside the event, and by the time we were talking about November most of the good dates were gone. Available beach dates for November came back as the 6th, 8th, 22nd, 27th, 28th and 30th. We settled on the drone show on the 6th and the engagement celebration two days later.

His bank could not release funds before 1 September. I told him plainly that this made the drone timeline late, and the Guinness timeline later.

I cannot block a date without a deposit. Venues do not hold, drone operators do not hold, and I am not going to tell a client a date is secure when it is not.

So it sits there. Approved, priced, designed in outline, and unbuilt.

What I would do differently

I would price the record component and put it in front of the client on day one instead of two weeks in. It changed how he thought about the whole project, and it should have been part of the first conversation rather than something I discovered while researching.

I would tie the venue hold to a deposit before doing the venue hunt, not after. I spent real time viewing spaces and negotiating an NOC for a date that was never locked.

And I would set the payment deadline against the permit window rather than against the event date. The event date is not the deadline. The NOC deadline is the deadline, and it sits about five weeks earlier.

The sequel

The approval does not expire the way a venue hold does. The category still does not exist. The number to beat is still whatever the last uncounted “hundreds of drones” proposal managed, which is to say nothing certified at all.

If this client comes back, we build it. If he does not, the next person who wants her face in the sky at 2,000 pixels gets the record instead.
