The Ring That Flew in on My Dad’s Neck: Why Smart Couples Buy the Engagement Ring in Dubai

Short answer: Buying an engagement ring in Dubai usually costs less than buying the same ring in Europe or the UK, because the UAE charges 5% VAT where Ireland charges 23% and the UK charges 20%. The gold is hallmarked and inspected by the government, the diamond market here is one of the deepest on earth, and if you plan your proposal with us, the ring is made to order and waiting for you at the setup. No airport nerves. No pocket patting.

I know this because I did it the hard way. Let me tell you how.

Dublin, 2006. A Grey’s Anatomy Problem.

I got engaged in Dublin. Around the same time, Katherine Heigl got engaged to Josh Kelley, and her ring was everywhere. Magazines. TV. The side of a bus, probably. A pear-shaped diamond, the teardrop, reported at around three carats, sitting in a halo of tiny pavé stones like it had its own security detail.

My wife saw it. Then she made sure I saw it.

She calls it a nudge. I remember it more as a slap. A loving one. The it’s-time kind. The message was simple: if this is ever happening, that is the ring.

Now, Ireland. Beautiful country. Wonderful people. Rain that has a personality. But things were expensive, and a ring like that, bought over a Dublin counter with Irish VAT stacked on top, was not happening on my budget. I did the maths twice. Then a third time, hoping the numbers had changed their mind. They had not.

Plan B Had a Very Indian Supply Chain

So I did what any sensible man with family in Mumbai does. I took the photo of Katherine Heigl’s ring and sent it to my brother.

The instruction was three words: like for like.

My brother found a jeweller, the jeweller got to work, and a few weeks later the ring existed. Then came the delivery problem. Couriers? Too risky. Post? I value my sleep. So I bought my dad a flight to Dublin.

He wore the ring on a chain around his neck the whole way. A retired gentleman walking through arrivals in Dublin with my entire future resting on his chest, looking like he was just visiting his son. Which, to be fair, he was.

And here is the part that still makes me laugh. With the stone, the gold, the making charges and a return flight for my father, it still came out cheaper than buying the ring in Europe.

That was the moment I understood something I have been telling clients ever since: where you buy the ring changes what you pay for the ring. Sometimes by a lot.

Today, nobody needs to fly their dad anywhere. You just need to be in Dubai.

Why Dubai Works Out Cheaper: The 5% Story

Tax is the quiet killer in a ring budget. You pick the stone, you agree the setting, you feel good. Then the tax lands on the whole thing.

In the UAE, finished gold and diamond jewellery sold to a consumer carries 5% VAT. That’s it. Here is what the same purchase carries in some of the markets our clients fly in from:

CountryStandard VAT rateTax on every 10,000 spent
United Arab Emirates5%500
Germany19%1,900
United Kingdom20%2,000
France20%2,000
Italy22%2,200
Ireland23%2,300

Same currency, whatever currency you think in. On every 10,000 you spend on a ring, Dublin takes 2,300 in tax and Dubai takes 500. The EU average standard rate sits at roughly 21.8% in 2026. That gap is a honeymoon upgrade. Or a second, smaller ring for the wedding. Or, in my case, a return flight for a very patient father.

The Gold Here Is Checked by People With Very Serious Scales

Dubai didn’t earn the name City of Gold by accident. Hallmarking in the UAE is law, not a nice-to-have. Under Federal Law No. 11 of 2015, gold sold here has to carry its fineness stamp, and the Dubai Central Laboratory, part of Dubai Municipality, inspects the trade.

Those inspections are unannounced. Inspectors walk into jewellery shops, test stock and check that the scales are calibrated to the milligram. Think about that next time someone on holiday elsewhere offers you “18 karat, trust me, my friend.”

Look inside the band. You want to see the number that matches what you paid for:

750 means 18K, 75% pure gold. The standard for engagement rings because it holds a stone securely and survives daily life.

875 means 21K.

916 means 22K, softer and richer in colour, loved for traditional pieces.

For a diamond engagement ring, 18K or platinum is what we’d put on your list. Softer gold is gorgeous, but it isn’t built to grip a centre stone for the next fifty years.

You’re Standing in One of the Diamond Capitals of the World

Most people think of Antwerp. Fewer people know that Dubai now moves more diamonds by value than almost anywhere. According to DMCC and Dubai Customs figures, Dubai’s diamond trade hit a record US$41.7 billion in 2025, with 359.5 million carats traded. The Dubai Diamond Exchange in Almas Tower is the only bourse in the GCC affiliated with the World Federation of Diamond Bourses.

What that means for you, in plain terms:

Choice. Jewellers here are close to the source, so the range of stones in any shape, size and grade is wide.

Price discipline. Lots of stones, lots of dealers, and buyers from every continent keep pricing sharp.

Lab-grown or natural, your call. Lab-grown diamonds now make up around 39% of Dubai’s diamond trade by carat volume. If you want more carat for the budget, that conversation is easy to have here.

Coloured stones. Sapphire, emerald, ruby. Dubai’s coloured gemstone trade crossed US$1.1 billion last year.

The Real Reason: The Ring Is Waiting at the Proposal

Tax and gold are the numbers. This is the bit that matters on the night.

Every proposal I plan has one moment where everything else stops. The ring. And in almost every story that goes sideways, the ring is involved. It stayed in the hotel safe. It set off the metal detector at the airport while she was standing right behind him. It was in the jacket he took off at dinner. One client spent a whole flight from London holding his carry-on on his lap like it was a newborn.

When you order the ring through Proposal Dubai, none of that is your problem. Here’s how it runs:

1. Send us the photo. Yes, the screenshot she liked on Instagram. The celebrity ring. The Pinterest board she thinks you haven’t seen. Exactly what I did with my brother, minus the international relay.

2. Design it properly. DIAN Jewellers builds a 3D design so you see the ring before it’s made. Stone shape, setting, band width, metal.

3. Certified stone. Diamonds come with GIA certification, so you know what you’re paying for in writing.

4. Made in two to three weeks. Plenty of time to plan the proposal alongside it.

5. Price matched. If you’ve been quoted less for the same specification, show us.

6. Delivered to the moment. The ring arrives in an LED-lit box, and it’s part of the setup. You don’t carry it through an airport. You don’t hide it in a sock. You kneel, and it’s there.

7. A keepsake. Every ring comes with a Gold Note, a small thing couples keep long after the flowers are gone.

My dad wore my ring around his neck for about eight hours. You won’t have to wear yours for eight seconds.

A Few Honest Things Before You Buy

I’d rather you hear these from me than find out later.

Check your home customs allowance. If you fly home with a new ring, your country may ask about it. Allowances differ. Keep the invoice and certificate in your hand luggage.

Know her ring size. Borrow one she wears on that finger, or ask her best friend to do some quiet detective work. Resizing is possible but it’s better to get it right first time.

Sort the budget before the showroom. Diamonds are very good at making budgets feel flexible.

Don’t buy from anyone who won’t show you the hallmark or the certificate. In Dubai you shouldn’t have to ask twice.

Foire aux questions

Is it cheaper to buy an engagement ring in Dubai?

Usually, yes. The UAE charges 5% VAT on jewellery, compared with 19% to 23% across much of Europe and 20% in the UK. Visitors can also reclaim most of that 5% through the UAE Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme when buying from a registered retailer.

Is gold in Dubai real and hallmarked?

Yes. Hallmarking is required under UAE Federal Law No. 11 of 2015, and the Dubai Central Laboratory carries out unannounced inspections of jewellers, including purity testing and scale calibration. For 18K gold, look for the 750 stamp.

How long does a custom engagement ring take in Dubai?

A custom ring typically takes two to three weeks from approved 3D design to finished piece.

Can Proposal Dubai have the ring ready at my proposal?

Yes. We coordinate the ring with our partner Jewellers and build it into your proposal, so it’s waiting in an LED-lit box at the setup. You never have to carry it around Dubai or through an airport.

Can you copy a celebrity engagement ring?

We can design a ring inspired by a style you love, like a pear-shaped diamond in a halo setting. Send the photo, and we’ll build an original 3D design around the shape, size and setting you want.

Should I choose a natural or lab-grown diamond?

Both are real diamonds with the same physical properties. Lab-grown gives you more carat for the budget. Natural holds its rarity story. We’ll show you both side by side and you decide.

The Ending

My wife still wears that ring. It still makes me smile, not because of the stone, but because of everything it took to get it onto her hand. A magazine. A brother. A jeweller in Mumbai. A dad with a chain around his neck.

You get the good part of that story without the airport.

Send me the photo of the ring she keeps showing you. I’ll handle the rest.
